Tuesday -- April 9, 2002 -- Day 2

A River Runs Through It...Warm and sunny....another sunscreen day. Today's lessons, for me, were: John -- an amputee (right leg above the knee), and Tim -- a 71-year-old T-11. The morning started with Rick waking everyone up since his alarm clock worked and nobody else's did. Quick showers and we were off. Arriving at the area a few minutes after 7am, we helped unload the equipment, reserved our gear, and went in for breakfast. Nice spread, but the french toast was a dangerous weapon...and it could break your teeth if you tried to bite into it without soaking for about 20 minutes in syrup..

John, Karen atop the Coney Glade liftJohn Marti and I met up on the dock. When he first saw me he said, "oh s***, I guess this is my instructor." A little deflating for me until he said he really wanted a hot babe as an instructor. I said he have to settle for me. Well...we set up in a monoski and cruised down to the first lift. He did great!

We toured the near part of the mountain...going up Fanny Hill and Coney Glade.John Marti We picked out a few places to pose for a picture and made sure we got around to skiing, too. The weather was too good to not take advantage of the vistas and the sunshine. Perfect spring conditions...early in the day.John Marti We took only a couple of runs before heading in. The thick snow made it difficult to manage, but that didn't stop us from have a wonderful day.

I lunched with Ted Holmes at the local Pizza establishement -- Goodfellow's. My veggie pizza was tasty. While wandering back to the ready area, I passed the main hotel lobby and noticed Tim Sells in the window. I knew it was Tim because I surreptitiously remembered the bib number of my Tim Sells and Archieafternoon lesson. Anyway, I introduced myself and chatted about what we would do. Tim seemed a little apprehensive so I tried to calm his anxiety. He indicated later that he was glad I came in and spoke with him, because it made him feel more comfortable about going out.

We selected a ski, found my helper, rigged Tim into the equipment, and started his lesson. Tim caught on very quickly. His biggest "problem" was one of relaxing -- he was just so tense that his arms would probably lock up if I didn't remind him to relax. Other than that, we had a great day...Tim Tim and Archiemaking turns and enjoying the outdoors. He said that it wasn't as hard as he thought it would be. He skied so well that he made it look easy.

We made sure we could see the sights, talk to other DAV participants, and just enjoy each other's company. Our second instructor was RJ who hails from Powerhorn. The young snowboarder made me feel really old....born in 1983! Wow!

When we returned to the dock area, Sis, Tim's wife, asked how he did. I just pointed to Tim and said that the grin would never come off his face.

Another skier working with a member of my group was Derek. I wanted to make sure his picture is here since he is an Oakland Raiders fan. Yahoo! Go Raiders! Here is Derek with Ted and Sarah.
